Denver Neuromuscular Therapy

Neuromuscular therapy is a form of very specific and detailed soft tissue manipulation that treats the underlying cause of chronic pain involving the muscular and nervous systems. This medically oriented form of massage addresses trigger points (tender muscles points), circulation, nerve compression and entrapment, postural distortion issues, and biomechanical problems that can be caused by repetitive movement injuries, automobile accidents and sports injuries.

History of Neuromuscular Therapy

For over 4,000 years, massage therapy has been used as an effective tool for healing. Hippocrates, the Father of modern medicine himself, used massage frequently and massage has been a part of many ancient cultures including China, India, Japan, Korea, Egypt, Rome, Greece, and Mesopotamia.

In the 1930's Dr. Stanley Lief, a trained Chiropractor and Naturopathic Physician along with his cousin Boris Chaitow, also trained in chiropractic and naturopathy, experimented with neuromuscular treatments for muscular pain at Leif's world-famous health resort in Hertfordshire, England. The treatment was so successful that their neuromuscular massage technique became common practice in osteopathic and sports therapy venues all over Europe.

Over the next several decades, two American Doctors, Dr. Janet Travell and Dr. David Simons, published a two volume set of textbooks titled "The Trigger Point Manual on Upper Body and Lower Body Pain". These volumes identified with research, documentation, and references that the source of most body pain was related to tiny "knots" in your muscles, or Trigger Points. As a result, a whole new field of study for chronic pain was introduced to the medical, dental, massage, and therapeutic communities, aptly called Neuromuscular Therapy.

Dr. Janet Travell went on to become the first woman to hold the position of White House Physician and was the personal physician to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. JFK actually credits her Trigger Point / Neuromuscular Massage Therapy as the only effective treatment for his debilitating back pain that was so crippling, he actually considered stepping down as President. President Kennedy once called her a "medical genius".

Today, medical doctors, chiropractors, osteopathic physicians and physical therapists like myself advocate the use of Neuromuscular Therapy to ensure maximum health.

Limited to a Specific Treatment Area

In my professional opinion, Neuromuscular Massage Therapy is very specific and detailed work. The area to be treated may take 30 to 90 minutes to treat. Therefore, I will have time to treat 1-3 areas that are causing you the most pain during your session.

I advise my Denver clients to plan on not working out or do heavy physical exercise the day of treatment, as this type of massage may feel like a workout the next day. Also, drink plenty of water the day before, the day of, and the day after treatment, as this type of massage releases toxins into the bloodstream that you will want to flush out of the body through the natural process of elimination.

Benefits of Neuromuscular Therapy Massage include:

Do you suffer from any of the following?

  • Neck/Back/Shoulder Pain or Discomfort
  • General Muscular Aches and Pains
  • Arm and Hand Pain/Tingling
  • Leg and Foot Pain/Numbness
  • Tendonitis
  • Whiplash
  • Muscle Strains

Are these Chronic Conditions a Constant Bother?

  • Headaches
  • Arthritis
  • Circulatory Problems
  • Reduced Flexibility
  • Sciatica
  • TMJ Syndrome
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Neuromuscular Therapy produces long term results for these issues where other approaches have failed. It can be part of a comprehensive program, complementing other health care treatments received in Denver, for a program of total well-being, or it may be part of a targeted approach designed to focus on specific areas of pain.

Why do I feel HIGH after my Neuromuscular Therapy Massage?

About 90% of my clients get an all-natural massage "high" after receiving a Neuromuscular Therapy massage. I am a massage therapist, and I work with you well below your pain tolerance level to keep you in the "hurts good" zone and not push you into the "hurts bad" zone. This causes your brain to release a chemical called, "endorphins", which are the body's natural pain killer, giving you an overwhelmingly relaxed "HIGH" feeling by the time your session has ended.

Because endorphins are made by one's own brain, clients that live in the Mile-High City and are subject to employment drug tests prefer getting a neuromuscular massage rather than consuming Marijuana products.
